A Musical Album for My Grandmother

My grandmother was born in a village near a river valley, beside a stone quarry. Her childhood was relatively comfortable, but as time passed, her world gradually collapsed. With her medicine box, she walked through villages, treating illnesses, giving injections, delivering babies. She knew the mountain paths, and she knew which family had just welcomed a new child.

She once walked through the mountains and villages, carrying an old medicine box on her back. Inside it were the skills she learned as a young woman at a women’s nursing school — administering injections, IV drips, delivering babies, dressing wounds — a full set of knowledge that spans the border between life and death. Though she never became a licensed doctor, the white coat she wore made her the one many villagers remembered as “arriving just in time.”

These memories are not mine directly — they come from my mother and my uncle, passed down through their retellings. The sound of the medicine box, the image of her walking away on a path, the scent of antiseptic that always lingered in her home — all of these wove together to form her daily presence.

She had delivered many children and cared for many patients. People remembered her name, her gentle touch, her careful instructions. But her kindness was never quite repaid by fate. In her later years, after a fall, her health declined steadily. Parkinson’s disease gradually took away her strength, her words, her expressions—and finally, the hands she had once used to care for others. Day after day, she remained in a wheelchair, cared for in turn by her children.

There was no grand ceremony to her life, no public recognition. She simply lived—steadily, quietly—and in the end, donated her corneas so that someone else might see. She left behind no words, but passed on her gaze in another form.

A Silent Testament, Set to Music

This instrumental album is titled The Light in Her Eyes. The eight tracks are drawn from fragments of her life, organized by my uncle. What the music records is not her voice, but her silence; not her biography, but her breath; not her story, but the light we remember.

Stylistically, it leans toward neoclassical music, but its structure is more like a Hong Kong or Taiwanese pop ballad stripped of lyrics — a shape where the voice is missing, and melody alone must carry what remains. That silence is itself a memory of her later years—when she could no longer speak, but was still listening, remembering, and responding. Now it is our turn to fall silent, and in that silence, fill the music’s empty spaces with memory.

This is not a dramatic album. Its emotion is restrained, even minimal. Like many ordinary lives, it flows with no dramatic peaks or reversals — only steady kindness and quiet endurance. She had no spotlight moments, and yet, she always shone.

Eight Scenes of Her Life

1. Valley of Stones|

Where she was born — near a quarry, stone roads beneath her feet, witnessing both her early stability and later unrest.

2. Dawn Woven Quietly|

She studied at a women’s nursing school, weaving a future of care and belief into the light of each morning.

3. Dust and Salt|

A bitter and barren period. The earth was sour, the tears were salty, and hardship seeped in like wind through her skin — but she did not fall.

4. Carrying the Box|

She never took off her white coat, nor left the mountain paths. A woman and her medicine box — she became the hope that many waited for.

5. The Midwife of Forgotten Names|

She helped bring countless lives into the world. Few remembered her face. The lives she delivered were remembered; her own life slowly faded into shadow.

6. Evening Without Movement|

A wheelchair still by the window. Light falls on her face. She looked into the distance — at the body and time slowly leaving her.

7. The Shape of Her Hands|

Tremors became her last language. The hands once skilled in injections, bandages, sutures — now beyond control, yet still trying to speak.

8. The Light in Her Eyes|

Where everything else had stilled, light continued. She donated her corneas, letting another person see the world. That light was never lost — only redirected.

On Memory and Music

This is a private act of memory. A quiet attempt to turn silence into sound. I did not try to portray someone “moving” or turn a life into myth. I only wanted to leave a trace of someone who truly lived, who gave, and who suffered.

There is no photo of her on the cover. No recording of her voice in the music. Only the atmosphere she once brought us. To remember someone so specific — that is enough.

I offer this album to my grandmother, and to all those who moved quietly through long lives. Whose names may not be remembered, whose kindness may never be rewarded, yet who left warmth behind in this world simply by being here.

《The Light in Her Eyes》已在 Spotify、Apple Music、网易云音乐、QQ 音乐等平台上线。

The Light in Her Eyes is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, NetEase Cloud, QQ Music, and more.

If you’re willing, we invite you to spend a quiet evening with these eight instrumental pieces. They don’t seek grandeur or resolution — just a gentle way of placing one woman’s life between time and sound.

May these sounds reach wherever you are — perhaps even into your own memories.
